One of the major pieces of gun control legislation of the 20th century, the Gun Control Act of 1968, was passed in response to the combination of increased gun violence in America, and imports of low-priced handguns. Geoffrey Williams in joint work with Alan Bartley, used a DLA grant to look into the details of the four countries shipping the most handguns to the United States in the mid-1960s: West Germany, Belgium, Italy and Spain
