Faculty Learning Communities

What are Faculty Learning Communities?

Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) are semester- or year-long learning seminars - pedagogial deep dives.

Groups of faculty from across disciplines that are

Small, structured, and supported

Provided the space for

Community, collaboration, and reflection

To produce and share new pedagogy

The BCTE supported three FLCs in 2023-2024

Simulating Reality

Six faculty, led by Dr. Steve Hess (Political Science), learned about incorporating role-playing games and simulations in history and political science courses.

Alternative Assessment

Six faculty, led by Dr. Avery Tompkins (Sociology), explored the critical pedagogy movement toward "ungrading."

Teaching with AI

Eight faculty members, led by Drs. JJ Wallace (HES) and Iva Katzarska-Miller (Psychology), explored different methods and ethical considerations for incorporating AI into higher education classrooms.

In addition to Transy-focused websites, workshops, and presentations, the members of these FLCS are presenting at conferences and sharing their experiences and expertise through publications!

The BCTE currently supports two FLCs

Data Science for Social Justice

Twelve faculty members, led by Dr. Michael Kelly (Mathematics), will study the role that data science plays in supporting social inequality and consider ways to use data as arguments and evidence to support individuals and groups in the struggle for social justice.

Vocational Advising Models

Associate Dean Tiffany Wheeler and Assistant Dean Tracy Dunn will collaborate with Transy faculty and staff to build new models for advising students on their paths toward graduation and life after Transy.

We are also facilitating a Very Special Faculty Learning Community
